Simply Fortran for macOS No Longer Available

Simply Fortran for macOS was available in version 2 and 3 release lifespans. However, support for macOS was dropped for version 4.0 for a variety of reasons:

  • Lack of Debugging - Simply Fortran uses the GNU Debugger as its engine for its debugging interface, but the GNU Debugger does not support macOS any longer. Currently there are no debuggers available supporting the Fortran language on macOS.

  • Graphics Toolkit Issues - Simply Fortran for macOS utilized the Gtk 3 toolkit, sharing its interface with GNU/Linux releases. However, Gtk has moved on to the source-incompatible Gtk 4, making macOS support for the old version precarious at best.

  • General macOS Issues - Maintaining support for macOS has been particularly problematic due to operating systems updates that break backwards compatibility regularly in small ways. macOS development tools are particularly hostile towards alternative compilers and often change in unannounced ways, indirectly breaking Simply Fortran.

Simply Fortran for macOS may return in the future, but it is not currently available.
