Simply Fortran 4.2 Now Available
Posted on Nov. 2, 2026
Approximatrix is happy to announce the release of Simply Fortran version 4.2 for Windows and GNU/Linux. The latest version fixes some outstanding issues with the development environment and adds convenience functionality to project searches.
Project-wide text searches now offers the ability to filter searched files by filename pattern. When the options dropdown is exposed in the Text Search panel, a File Pattern field is now available. This feature can be useful when dealing with large projects where results are only desired from certain file types, for example, greatly improving search speed.
Documentation of command line tools and common keyboard shortcuts is now available in Help file. The command line tools help explains the different tools available on Windows that Simply Fortran provides on the command line and how to disable these tools if desired. On both Windows and GNU/Linux, the Keyboard Shortcuts documentation explains some hotkeys that may not be initially obvious to users.
On Windows, a memory issue when requesting the Package Flags popup in the Project Options window, which would cause a crash, has been fixed. The editor context menu, when triggered via the keyboard rather than a mouse right-click, now appears near the current cursor position rather than in the corner of the screen.
On GNU/Linux, the appearance of element insert popups, accessible in the editor via either the Control-I hotkey or from the editor's context menu under Insert, has been drastically improved. The Control-Tab and Control-Shift-Tab hotkeys now work again on GNU/Linux. A possible crash that could occur when an editor tab was dragged outside of Simply Fortran has been fixed.
On all platforms, language servers will now start and shutdown more reliably depending on changes to the project. When files are added to a project, Simply Fortran will now start a language server for those languages where Simply Fortran has an available language server if necessary. Conversely, language servers are now reliably shut down if projects no longer require a server for a given language. Language servers are also now closed when a project is closed. The Fortran language server support was improved to possibly mark procedures as subroutines appropriately if the language server provides a procedure signature during reporting.
A new menu option in the Edit menu under the Language section was added to allow manually forcing the current editor to attempt re-colorizing based on syntax.
The latest version is available from the Download page for Windows and GNU/Linux.
