Version 4.1 Released!

Posted on Oct. 6, 2026

Approximatrix is happy to announce the availability of Simply Fortran 4.1 for Windows and GNU/Linux. The latest version addresses a number of user-reported issues in the 4.0 release to improve the reliability and functionality of Simply Fortran's development environment.

Major problems related to running Simply Fortran on recently updated Ubuntu 26.04 installations have been fixed. The issues stemmed from a combination of a recent update of Ubuntu's rust-based coreutils and a premature library path adjustment by our launcher. This problem led to Simply Fortran failing to start at all on Ubuntu systems due to a failure to detect the current C runtime version. Simply Fortran should now work correctly on Ubuntu 26.04. Additionally, possible failure to resolve a new trial period on any GNU/Linux systems should now be corrected.

On all systems, Simply Fortran's dependency calculations can now process nested Fortran INCLUDE statements. Files referenced by INCLUDE statements that themselves contain INCLUDE statements will generate proper build dependency on these nested INCLUDE statements.

A major bug in the dependency calculations that was manifested in a generated makefile without any Fortran dependencies when a complex dependency tree should exist was corrected. When generating a makefile while dependency calculations were ongoing, a timeout could result in incomplete dependency values being returned rather than warning the user that more time was necessary. The bug fix hopefully corrects this intermittent but highly notable problem.

The debugger will now open the last project source code location available in the stack when a target program crash occurs. The previous behavior was to detect if the crash happened in user code and open the user's code location if the crash was indeed viewable. If a crash occurred in runtime library or external library code, the debugger would take no action beyond notifying the user that the crash had occurred. The new behavior will find the last viewable location in the stack when the crash occurs if it did not occur in the user's code and open it instead. A bug where the stack location arrows in the editors would not update on unexpected crashes has also been corrected as part of this new handling of crashes in the debugger.

Some additional minor issues with the user interface were corrected. Missing icons on GNU/Linux should no longer be a problem. Some unnecessary option buttons in Windows were removed.

The latest version is now available on our Download page. Users are encouraged to contact us if any issues are encountered.
